Cathedral of Nicholas the Wonderworker description and photo - Ukraine: Mariupol. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionThe Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the city of Mariupol, Donetsk region has long been the main center of the city's spiritual revival. The temple is located on Kalmiusskaya street. In May 1946, a year after the end of the Great Patriotic War, the Mariupol City Executive Committee registered four religious associations of the Russian Orthodox Church. The first on this list was St. Nicholas Church in the village of Novoselovka. The name of the church is associated with the fact that St. Nicholas has long been the patron saint of all sailors, which is very important in the seaside town. But the main thing is that the opening of the church in the name of St. Nicholas emphasized the successive connection with the historical past: the temple of the Zaporozhye Cossacks in the Kalmius palanca and the right side-altar of the Kharlampievsky cathedral were also dedicated to this saint. The community acquired a house in the village of Novoselovka, this house was demolished and a spacious building was built, which the community adapted for a church. The new church building in the style of Russian churches was laid in 1989. The cathedral was under construction for three years and by the whole world. Thousands of residents of the city took an active part in its construction: believers themselves raised funds and helped to build the church. The construction of the church was completed in 1993, and the consecration of the cathedral took place in January of the same year. The iconostasis of the temple was painted by local craftsmen. Then on the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker new domes were installed, consecrated in 1991 In the Mariupol Cathedral there are such revered shrines: a copy of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Mariupol" and the relics of St. Ignatius of Mariupol, as well as particles of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Optina elders, St. Theophan the Recluse and Martyr Tryphon. There are Sunday schools for adults and children at the church.
