Photo and description

The bronze monument to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, located in the central part of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is one of the main decorations of the city.

On October 17, 1740, the packets of the Second Kamchatka Expedition under the names “Saint Apostle Peter” and “Saint Apostle Paul” entered the harbor. It was then that Vitus Bering decided to name this harbor - the harbor of Sts. The Apostles Peter and Paul, and the new village that appeared on its shore - the Peter and Paul harbor. It was this date that became the date of birth of the city.

Since until that time the city did not have a monument dedicated to these saints, and Orthodoxy is considered the main religion in Kamchatka, the city mayor's office decided to erect a monument to the holy apostles Peter and Paul. The sculptor Sergei Isakov was commissioned to develop a plan for the composition of the future monument. The architect put the designed model of the monument on public display in the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, after which discussions began about the choice of the location for its installation. Many different proposals have been put forward. As a result, the site for the new monument was chosen on the coast of Avacha Bay, against the background of an amazing mountain landscape.

The grand opening of the monument to the heavenly patrons of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the embankment of Avacha Bay took place on October 16, 2005. At the same time, the consecration took place monument.

The composition of the figures of the apostles Peter and Paul, holding the cross and pointing forward, stands on a large marble pedestal. A special color of the six-meter bronze monument is given by its magnificent background - Avachinskaya Sopka.

Today, a strict and laconic monument dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul is the main symbol of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and its environs.
