Photo and description

The Archaeological Museum in Split is one of the most attractive sights of the city. The museum was founded in 1820 by the Dalmatian government. It is located in the northern part of the city center and is the oldest museum not only in Croatia, but throughout Eastern Europe.

The exposition of the museum is rich - here you can see archaeological finds from prehistoric times, objects of the Greek colony of the Adriatic and even relics of the early Christian years and the early Middle Ages found in the city and its environs, including the most interesting finds recovered by archaeologists during excavations Narona and Salona.

The building that houses the Split Archaeological Museum was designed by Viennese architects. It was built in 1914, but it was opened to visitors only in 1922, after the First World War.

An extensive collection of antique and medieval coins is presented to the attention of visitors. The museum also contains the richest library on archeology and history, which has more than 30,000 books. The Archaeological Museum has been publishing its own journal "Vestnik of Archeology and History of Dalmatia" since 1878.

The best exhibition was held in the museum in 1970 in honor of the 150th anniversary of its existence. This exhibition featured stone monuments - sculptures and epitaphs from prehistoric times and the early Middle Ages. Now the exposition of the Archaeological Museum has approximately 150,000 items of historical importance. The museum has the largest collection of precious stones in Croatia.
