Photo and description

The Ethnographic Museum was founded in 1910 as the first ethnographic museum in Croatia. Throughout the existence of the museum, seven permanent exhibitions have been held. In 1910 and 1919, they were presented in different buildings of the local school.

In 1924 the museum moved to the building of the former town hall. This is the most beautiful building on the People's Square, it was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style. It still houses the Ethnographic Museum. The exposition of the museum is devoted mainly to the Dalmatian region, primarily its crafts and trades, although it includes items from other parts of Croatia and neighboring states.

The museum contains almost all typical folk costumes and decorations of the region, both men and and women. Traditionally, these costumes are extremely intricate and quite unique in design. The products of folk crafts are richly and variedly presented - dishes, knitted products, handicrafts - wood carving, wicker baskets, shoes. Here are collected samples of economic activity for almost two centuries.

An interesting part of the exhibition are the interiors of houses in Split from the late 19th - early 20th century. Also, the museum will delight everyone who comes with a fabulous collection of wooden chests with a complex and interesting design.

In short, the museum is a great place to learn more about the culture and history of Croatia, its Dalmatian region and soak up the spirit of “that time” ... Draw your attention to the delicate ceramics,
