Rating: 8,7/10 (965 votes) The Split Archaeological Museum was founded in 1820 and is considered one of the oldest museums in Croatia. The museum has been located at its present site since 1922. The archaeological museum houses finds dating back to the period of the Greek colonization of the Andriatic, early Christianity, the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. The museum is famous for the finds discovered during excavations in the palace of Diocletian and the ancient Salona: mosaics, decorations, ceramics, skillfully crafted sarcophagi. The museum contains about 150,000 exhibits. Of these, there are quite large collections of ancient and medieval coins, precious stones. Here you can also get acquainted with the collections of early Christian relics, ancient clay lamps (about 1600), objects made of Roman glass, metal and bone. The museum has a fairly large library, which contains about 30,000 books on history and archeology. In 1878, the Archaeological Museum of Split began to publish its journal"Bulletin of Archeology and History".
