Photo and description

Among the many temples in Vienna, the Church of Our Lady the Victorious (Maria vom Siege) certainly deserves special attention - a Roman Catholic parish church located on Mariahilfer Street in the Rudolfsheim-Funfhaus district .

The Church of Our Lady of the Victorious was built by the famous Austrian-German architect Friedrich von Schmidt, the author of the famous Vienna City Hall. The project of the temple was developed in the late 50s, the construction began in 1868 and lasted seven years.

The building of the church was erected in the architectural style popular at that time known as "historicism" or "eclecticism", a feature of which is a harmonious combination of several different styles (neo-gothic, neo-baroque, neo-renaissance, etc.). It is an imposing and very original structure with a huge dome, two massive towers and many small turrets, giving the building some pomp. In general, the appearance of the temple is dominated by the neo-Gothic, while the interior design is very reminiscent of the neo-Byzantine style. The height of the church with a dome is 68 m.

The church got its name in honor of one famous ancient icon depicting the scene of the Nativity of Christ, thanks to which, according to legend, the Catholics won the battle at White Mountain (one of the most important episodes Thirty Years' War) near Prague in November 1620. You can see a copy of this icon to the right of the altar of the temple. The original is kept in the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome.
