Photo and description

The Theatinerkirche (St. Gaetan) Church is a high baroque basilica. Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife established the church in gratitude for the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne, Max Emanuel. After the consecration, the Church of St. Gaetan was transferred to the Teatinian monks.

Construction lasted from 1663 to 1770. The exterior decoration was done by the architect Cuvillier and his son. The majestic facade, decorated with two stylized towers, a beautiful 70-meter-high dome, elegant interior decor - all this has become a role model in the creation of many Bavarian temples. The rich baroque interior of the church is decorated with magnificent stucco work by Giovanni Antonio Vascardi.

Not far from the Teatinerkirche is the Court Garden, which was founded by Maximilian I in 1613-17 according to the principles of Italian park art. The center of the Court Garden, surrounded by arcades, is the temple decorated with the figure of Diana.
