Named after Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of independent India, the zoological park was officially unveiled to the public in 1963. It is located on an area of 150 hectares and is adjacent to the huge two-hundred-year-old lake Mir Alam Tank. The park is a kind of security zone, where conditions are created for each individual animal that imitate its natural habitat. In total, the Nehru Zoo is home to about 250 species of animals, birds and reptiles, such as tigers, Asiatic lions, deer, kangaroos, antelopes, panthers, pythons, Indian (spectacled) cobras.
