Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionMonument to M.S. Babushkin is the oldest monument in Syktyvkar that has survived to this day. Mikhail Sergeevich Babushkin is a Soviet polar pilot. Born in the Moscow region in the village of Bordino, near the village of Losinoostrovsky in 1893. In 1914 he was drafted into the army. He graduated from the military aviation school in Gatchina. He began to fly before 1917. In 1915, Mikhail Babushkin received the rank of pilot and was left as an instructor. In 1920, Babushkin took part in the Civil War as a member of a partisan detachment. In 1923 he was demobilized and began his service in the Arctic as a civil aviation pilot. In the 1930s, Mikhail Babushkin took part in many polar expeditions; he was the first to land an aircraft on the Arctic ice. In 1940, one of the streets of Syktyvkar was renamed to Babushkina Street. On November 7, 1940, a sculptural bronze bust was erected on this street, which was made by the sculptor N.E. Sarkisov. Initially, the monument was located at the intersection of the current Babushkina and Kirov streets, at the entrance to the Kirov Park of Culture. The bust of the polar pilot stood on a high multistage concrete pedestal with a commemorative inscription engraved on it. Everyone who went down to the park could see the bust of Babushkin from afar. In 1972, the monument was dismantled, and the bust of the pilot was moved to the square near the Rodina cinema. After the monument was moved, only the appearance of the pedestal under the bust changed. It became somewhat lower, its form was simplified. The reduction of the pedestal was caused by an architectural necessity, since the park where the monument was erected was small, there was a sidewalk next to it, and it was from it that the townspeople should be able to see the sculpture completely. If the pedestal was left the same size, We also recommend reading Church of St. George (Kirche St. Georg) description and photos - Germany: Ulm Topic: Monument to M. S.
