One of the most famous and remarkable institutions in the city of Kostroma is the Museum of theatrical costume. If we judge the museum in terms of the duration of its work, it is important to say that it is quite young, because the opening took place in the summer of August 29, 2010. Despite its "youth", the museum is the only one of its kind in Russia, the entire exposition of which is entirely devoted to the theme of theatrical costume. The building of the museum is located in a house located on Simanovskogo street, where Volkov Fedor Grigorievich, a resident of the city of Kostroma, and also the founder of the national Russian theater, spent all his childhood.

As you know, the Kostroma State Drama Theater named after A.N. ... Ostrovsky is one of the oldest in the whole of Russia. It is located on Prospect Mira, house 9. The theater was opened in 1808.

In the middle of 1812, the Imperial Theater from Moscow arrived from Moscow to Kostroma, which had a great influence on the repertoire of the new theater, influencing the culture of the entire city. The theater building was built in 1863 and has survived to this day in a fairly good condition, virtually unchanged. It has become an excellent example of traditional classical architecture, together with the outstanding buildings of Kostroma - the Borshchov House and the Fire Tower.

For many years, eminent actors took part in theatrical performances, including: Maria Ermolaeva, Mikhail Schepkin, Valentina Fedotova.

At the beginning of 1854, Ostrovsky's plays were staged, which became a significant event, after all, the works of this playwright were presented for the first time on the theater stage. Thanks to this, it was decided to name the theater in honor of A.N. Ostrovsky.

In 1967, on the opposite side from the main entrance, a bust of the outstanding playwright was installed, the chief sculptor of which was N.Ye. Sarkisov (previously the bust was located near the Ostrovsky estate museum in the village of Shchelykovo).

In 1983, the Drama Theater of the city of Kostroma was awarded the honorary order of the Red Banner of Labor, and in 1999 it was awarded the title of state.

Among the theater artists it is worth noting: Stanislav Dolgosheev, Viktor Pozdnyakov, Gennady Anureev, Olga Mikhailichenko, Antonin Nosyreva, Tatiana Nozdrina, Natalya Inshakova, Nina Mavrina, Alexander Kirpichev and many other outstanding actors.

Eminent works of the drama theater include productions: "Blazh" by Ostrovsky, "Hamlet" by William Shakespeare, "Freaks" by Chekhov A.P., "Freeloader" by Turgenev I.S., "Castle in Sweden" by Francoise Sagan and some others.

The exposition in the museum is located on the first floor, occupying it completely. It is dedicated to the famous works of the playwright Ostrovsky, after whom the Drama Theater in Kostroma was named. The exposition presents for visitors 15 different costumes that were previously used in productions of the same name of Ostrovsky's work - "There was not a penny, but suddenly altyn", "Forest", "Enough simplicity for any wise man", "Warm heart", "The last victim ". In addition, the exhibition includes photographs and sketches from the listed performances. It is worth noting, that the oldest costume was an outfit sewn in 1963, which has survived in excellent condition to this day.

At the moment, repair and construction work is underway in the museum building, after which new expositions will be presented here on the second floor as well as in the basement. Work on a new exhibition, which is entirely dedicated to Fyodor Volkov, continues fruitfully. The plans of the museum include the idea of installing the lives of actors behind the scenes and on stage. In addition, it is planned to equip the auditorium of the 19th century.

In the funds of the Kostroma Museum of Stage Costume there are more than 12 thousand of a wide variety of costumes, including the outfits of Maria Stuart herself, Ivan the Terrible, Anna Karenina, and others especially popular and famous characters.
