Photo and description

The Archaeological Museum, located in the center of Larnaca, the third largest settlement in Cyprus, is an ideal place for lovers of antiquity. It contains a rich collection of antiquities found on the territory where the city is now located.

The museum was created in 1969, then it had only two exhibition halls, but already in 1987-1988 its exposition was greatly expanded. The collection of the museum consists of items that belong to different historical eras - from the Neolithic period to the time of the Roman Empire. Most of them were found at the sites of the ancient settlements of Khirokitia (Kirokittia) and Tenta. Surprisingly, these settlements were founded even before the period of navigation, which immediately raised a lot of questions about whether how people were able to get from the mainland to the island. Over time, scientists came to the conclusion that Cyprus became an island after a strong earthquake, and before that it was one with the territory of Syria.

A special place in the collection is occupied by items discovered on the territory of the ancient city of Kition, the ruins of which are located about 1 kilometer from the museum building, so visitors, if they wish, can even watch the process of excavation, which is still ongoing. So, there were found several elegant alabaster vases, coins, lamps, statues, and tools.

In just two main halls of the museum, you can see items made of ivory, ceramics, faience and alabaster, fragments of columns, statues of pagan gods, reconstruction of ancient dwellings and structures.
