Photo and description

Another attraction of Cordoba is the Church of San Francisco, which is one of the so-called "Ferdinand" churches, which received this name due to the fact that they were one of the first Christian churches built in Cordoba after it was conquered from the Moors by King Ferdinand III. The church was once part of the 13th century monastery of San Pedro el Real. The monastery, which belonged to the Franciscan religious communities, was quite large for that time and had a great influence in the religious life of the city. It is known that one hundred monks lived there in the 17th century, and it reached its greatest flourishing and influence in the 18th century. But at the beginning of the 19th century, during the offensive of Napoleonic troops, the monastery was destroyed, while the Church of San Francisco miraculously survived.

Originally built in the Gothic style, today the building of the Church of San Francisco only partially resembles the original structure. During the 18th century, the building was restored several times and many elements in the Baroque style appeared in its facades, which significantly changed the medieval appearance of the temple.

Today, the Church of San Francisco is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the richest churches in Cordoba. It houses many cultural treasures accumulated since the medieval period. It also houses an interesting collection of paintings by 18th century Cordoba artists. The beautiful antique furniture located in the premises of the temple deserves special attention.
