In the last quarter of the 16th century, Franciscan monks settled in Honduras. They had several monasteries and temples at their disposal. Around 1590-1592, the main church of the complex was an unremarkable adobe building without any decor and interior features. The Church of San Francisco (St. Francis) in Tegucigalpa is one of the oldest religious buildings in Honduras. The simplicity of the facade contrasts with the interior decoration, which has been refined over time.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Franciscan monastery became richer thanks to donations in the form of paintings, money and silver utensils. Several new bells, twisted decorative columns, altars, service books and many books were donated by neighboring temples. For more than 400 years of its existence, the church has gone through a lot, within its walls were educational institutions, the town hall, the command post of the rebels. Today, the temple looks completely restored, with towers once demolished to widen the streets, side altars and belfries with bells from 1592.
