The Belarusian Musical Theater was founded in 1970. Initially, it was called the State Theater of Musical Comedy of the Republic of Belarus. The premiere of the first play "The Lark Sings" (composer Yu. Semenyako) took place on January 17, 1971. The first years the theater did not have its own premises and performed in the premises of other theaters.

The building of the musical theater was built only in 1981 according to the project of the outstanding Belarusian architect O.F. Tkachuk. Around the theater building there is a square, to which beautiful terraces descend from the facade. The facade is decorated with figures of five muses - patrons of the theater, made of red copper. The sculptor is L. Zilbert. The interiors of the theater are lavishly decorated with gilding and red velvet, which creates an unforgettable holiday atmosphere.

The theater was opened on October 15, 1981. The first performance on the new stage was The Bat by Johann Strauss. This was the 12th season of the Minsk Musical Theater.

For the first time, performances based on the works of Belarusian authors were staged on the stage of a musical theater. Among them: `` Stepan is the great pan '' Yuri Semenyako, " Denis Davydov " Andrey Mdivani, " Adventures in the Alphabet Castle " Viktor Voytik, `` Glass of Water '' Vladimir Kondrusevich.

The theater's repertoire today is distinguished by a wide variety of genres: musicals, musical comedies, operettas, plays and New Year's performances for children, rock operas, ballet, concert programs.

In 2000, the theater was renamed the Belarusian State Musical Theater. In 2001 he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Collective of the Republic of Belarus. In 2009, the theater was rightfully called an academic theater.
