Photo and description

Unlike all cities in Spain, the main square of Toledo is not called Plaza Mayor, but Plaza de Zocodover. The Plaza de Zocodover, located in the northeastern part of Toledo, has historically been the central and busiest place in the city. During the Muslim domination, a market was located on this square, which is why the square is called Zokodover, because in translation from Arabic “zoco” means “market”. In addition to the fact that the Plaza de Zocodover has always been the center of the city's social life, its history also has a tragic color: it was here in medieval times, according to the decrees of the Holy Inquisition, executions of convicts were carried out.

Throughout its history, Zokodover Square has been rebuilt several times. At the beginning of the 16th century, with the expansion of the city and the growth of population, it became necessary to expand the main city square. By order of Queen Isabella, Castile was rebuilt, at the same time, the construction of an arcade typical of Spanish architecture was carried out. The second phase of the expansion work, during which a number of houses were demolished, was carried out at the beginning of the 17th century.
