Photo and descriptionThe Botanical Garden, located on the shores of Lake Kuivasjarvi in the northern part of the city, is the scientific base of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Oulu. Many different plants are grown here, including exotic ones, thanks to the exchange of seeds between the universities of Western Europe, Russia, Canada and the USA. In two huge greenhouses, built in the form of glass pyramids, only thermophilic plants growing from the equator to subtropics. These greenhouses were given a romantic name - Romeo and Juliet. Their design allows you to grow plants of different heights without overshadowing each other. The climatic conditions in this polar oasis are maintained automatically. In the Romeo greenhouse, 16 m high, there are plants of humid subtropics - banana and coconut palms, lianas, coffee trees, cocoa trees, climbing vines and eliphites growing on trees. The fourteen-meter Juliet is home to Mediterranean citrus, olive, myrtle and delicious pineapples. Among the paths and lawns there are amazing lithops, called living stones, as well as giant sequoias, decorative cedars, some types of mahogany, as well as New Zealand ferns and orchids. In total, about 1000 species of flora are represented in the greenhouses. The greenhouses are surrounded by an arboretum, where trees and shrubs grow in natural conditions, grouped according to their geographical origin - Asian, Eurasian, European and American. These are real theme parks consisting of 4000 different copies. A special place is reserved for medicinal plants.
