The National Art Museum of Catalonia was formed in 1990 as a result of the amalgamation of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Museum of Catalonia. The museum is located in the building of the National Palace (Palau Nacional), which was built for the opening of the first World Exhibition in 1929 and is located at the foot of Montjuic.

The Renaissance and Baroque periods, which were some of the brightest, but at the same time not the most significant in the art of Catalonia, are represented by the works of prominent Spanish, Flemish, Italian artists. Among them are works by Goya, Velazquez, Rubens, El Greco and others. The National Museum of Art also has an exposition of contemporary art of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, which includes paintings, photographs, and examples of applied art. This exhibition features the famous painting by Pablo Picasso "Woman in a Hat and with a Fur Collar".

There is also a collection of coins, medals and paper money, as well as a collection of prints and drawings. The museum has an art and universal library, and restoration work is also carried out here.
