Photo & Description

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA) is located in the El Raval area next to the city's modern culture center. The idea of creating such a museum belongs to the writer and art critic Alexander Syria-Pelisser. This idea was once supported by many educated artists, critics and art lovers who contributed to the creation of the museum's collection.

The design of the building for the museum was entrusted to the American architect Richard Meyer, who in his project used simple geometric shapes, glass surfaces, a lot of white, reflective materials. Constructed in a contemporary modernist style based on the interaction of lines, surfaces, color and movement through space, the building looks powerful and original, and the interior is simply mesmerizing.

Construction of the museum began in 1991, and on November 28, 1995, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art opened its doors to visitors.

The museum exhibits works of art from the second half of the 20th century to the present. The collection consists of more than 5,000 works, the bulk of which are Spanish and Catalan art, and there is also a large number of works by artists from all over the world. Expressionism, realism, surrealism and other trends in painting are presented in the museum's collection. The museum funds are constantly replenished thanks to private donations and acquisitions of museum specialists. There is also a library in the building of the museum, which contains books, magazines, publications devoted to art. The archive of the museum contains original documents such as letters, personal photographs, artist books, invitations, posters, brochures, magazines, paper and digital guides, and audiovisual materials.

The Government of Catalonia has declared the Museum of Contemporary Art a national museum.
