Photo and description

In the vicinity of Novigrad, as well as around other cities of Istria, in the past centuries, small rural churches appeared, intended more for casual travelers than for local residents. Churches have always been open to believers. The only such temple has survived to this day near Novigrad. This is the church of St. Anton. It stands at a distance from the old town, opposite the Novigrad pier.

The Church of St. Anton was built in the Gothic style. Minor changes to its appearance were made during the reconstruction in the 17th century. Another renovation took place two centuries later - in the 19th century. Then the temple was slightly expanded, and the builders made two more windows in the side walls.

The recent restoration of the temple became possible, thanks to the well-coordinated actions of the local priest, who coordinated the restoration work, and a number of specialists who renewed the building's exterior and interior. After the renovation, Bishop of Porec and Pula Drazen Kutles was present at the opening of the church. In his speech, he thanked everyone who took part in the restoration of the decoration of the church and especially noted the artist Bruno Garlando, who painted three frescoes on the walls of the temple. The central painting depicts the scene of the execution of Jesus, where Saint Anton the Abbot and Saint Anthony of Padua can be seen next to the Cross. The right fresco is dedicated to a scene from the life of St. Anthony of Padua, and the left one - to the image of the temptation of St. Anton the Abbot.

In addition to these frescoes, another fresco appeared in the Church of St. Anton - the scene of the Way of the Cross was depicted by the Novigrad artist Libere Saint Gortan.
