Photo and description

In the western part of the island of Rhodes, about 27 km from the capital and 5 km southeast of the village of Theologos, is the famous Valley of the Butterflies (Valley of Petaloudes). This area has been declared a protected area and is one of the most famous landmarks of the island.

The picturesque valley is literally buried in greenery. Lush vegetation, numerous streams, small lakes and beautiful waterfalls create a unique microclimate in the reserve, which is ideal for breeding butterflies. Even in the hottest season, the valley has clean and cool air.

In summer, millions of butterflies flock to the valley, covering everything around with a beautiful living carpet. Here you can also see magnificent butterflies from the bear family. This is a rather rare species inhabiting areas where amber trees grow, the resin of which has a characteristic strong odor. In the valley, butterflies spend the final stage of their life cycle. Visitors are strictly forbidden to disturb the peace of the butterflies in any way.

The beautiful Valley of the Butterflies is one of the most unique reserves not only in Greece, but also in Europe, as well as one of the most popular places on the island of Rhodes. Every year from May to September, a huge number of tourists come here, which, however, does not have a very good effect on the butterfly population.

After a long walk through the picturesque valley and contemplation of millions of beautiful tiny creatures, you can relax and dine in a small cozy tavern, which is located near the entrance to the reserve. There is also a small but very interesting Museum of Natural History,
