Photo and description

On Mount Pagos, the preserved ruins of a castle built by Lysimachus and rebuilt by the Byzantines in the 4th century rise majestically over Izmir. The castle is an excellent viewing platform, from where a magnificent panorama of the Izmir Bay opens.

The local bishop Polycarp was martyred in Kadifekale by the Romans in 155 BC. According to legend, when they tried to burn the saint, the flame did not touch him and they had to stab their victim with a sharp dagger. Church of st. Polycarp was reconstructed in 1620 by Suleiman the Great and is the oldest building in Izmir.
