Photo and description

Zaporizhzhya Regional Museum of Local Lore is a very significant cultural and scientific center of Ukraine. It was founded in 1921 and is located in a building that was once a zemstvo council. The initiator of the creation of this museum was the archaeologist and folklorist Ya.P. Novitsky, who later became its first director.

The collections of the Zaporozhye Museum of Local Lore are large enough and reach about 100 thousand different exhibits that tell about the history of the city from ancient times to the beginning of World War II. The main one is the exposition, which presents the life and traditions of the Ukrainian Cossacks.

Numismatic and ethnographic collections, old printed books and herbariums stored in the museum are of great value.
Among these collections are: archaeological finds that were found at the Zaporozhye burial mound; paleontological remains of animals that represent the Neogene and anthropogenic periods; collections of various insects; Sarmatian jewelry; various stuffed very rare birds, as well as a collection of weapons and household items of the Cossacks of the Zaporozhye Sich.

There is also a separate exhibition hall in the museum called “Nestor Makhno and His Time”. Makhno was a native of the Zaporozhye region and during the years of the revolution he became famous as the leader of the popular anarchist movement. The hall is completely dedicated to the events of the Ukrainian Revolution, which took place in the southern steppes of Zaporozhye in 1917-1921.

Since 2001, the museum has started publishing an annual “Museum Bulletin”. The first issue was dedicated to the tenth anniversary of independent Ukraine.
