Photo and description

The traditional windmills in Paros are considered a symbol of local architecture. Such structures are found throughout the island. Some of them have survived in their original form and are practically not used today, gradually falling into ruins, while others have been renovated and work as hotels, cafes and art galleries.

In the past, these windmills were vital for local residents. Using the power of the wind, people grinded wheat, the most important nutritional component of the time. Most of the mills were built in the 19th century, ceased to operate in the second half of the 20th century, with the arrival of more modern, faster and more efficient technology in these regions.

A good traditional wind turbine can be seen today in the port of Parikia, the busiest place on the island. Today this windmill serves as a tourist information center and a picturesque decoration of the city.

While driving around Paros, you will see such mills in the region of Naoussa, Marpissa, Lefkes and Aliki, they are an integral part of the local landscape.
