Photo and description

The Venetian fortress Kules (from the Turkish word "koules", which means "tower, fortress") in the city of Ierapetra was built in the early years of Venetian rule. Although, according to local legend, the first fortress in this place was built back in 1212 by Genoese pirates and was called Pescatore, and was used as a permanent pirate base. The first written sources that mention the construction of the fortress date back to 1307 and are official documents of the Venetian Senate. Later sources mention the strong destruction of the fortress after the earthquake of 1508. In 1626, under the leadership of General Francesca Morosini, extensive work was carried out to restore and strengthen the fortress. The main task of the fortress was to protect the city's harbor from Arab pirates, and then Turkish invaders.

During their reign, the Turks made many architectural changes to the building, but nevertheless left many Venetian elements. The strong structure of the fortress fully met their defense needs. The building was used until the 19th century.

Today, the Venetian fortress is the hallmark of the city of Ierapetra and a historical monument that recalls the former power of the ancient city and its difficult times. The beautiful architectural monument has been restored and is open to the public today. Well-preserved Venetian structures and Turkish additions can be seen here.
