Photo and description

Ierapetra is a city in the southeastern part of Crete on the Libyan Sea coast and the southernmost city in Europe. Its history dates back to the days of the Minoan civilization. The old town of Kato Mera is located in the southern part of Ierapetra and compares favorably with the modern part of the city for its architectural monuments and historical sites. Medieval narrow streets and small houses in the traditional Greek style are characteristic of the Kato Mera area, creating the atmosphere of a cozy ancient city.

Ancient Ierapetra played an important role in the life of the island. The city reached its peak in Roman times and retained its greatness in the Byzantine period. Later the city was destroyed and was used as a pirate base for a long time. Unfortunately, none of the majestic ancient structures have survived to this day. Ierapetra received a new flourish already in the Venetian period.

Of the sights of the old city, it is worth highlighting the Venetian fortress of Kules, which has been perfectly preserved to this day. The fortress is the hallmark of the city and is open to the public throughout the year. The pride of local residents is also the so-called "Napoleon's House", where in 1798 the great French commander Napoleon stayed on the way to Egypt. The old mosque, built during the period of Turkish rule, is also a historical monument.

Of particular interest is the Church of St. George, dating back to 1856. This is one of the most entertaining churches in Crete. The domes of the Church of St. George are entirely made of wood (mainly cedar). The oldest temple of the Byzantine period, the Church of Christ the Savior (1150-1160), is also located in Kato-Mera. Nearby is the Church of St. Nicholas (circa 1630), which houses the icon of the Holy Trinity, painted by Georgios Kastrofilakas.

In the numerous cozy cafes and restaurants on the waterfront, you can relax, enjoy local cuisine and enjoy beautiful panoramic views.
