The Museum of History and Folk Art, or the Historical and Ethnographic Museum, is located in the very center of the old town at Vernardou Street, 28. The Museum is a private organization and was founded in 1973 by Mrs. Voyatzakis and Mr. Stavrulakis.

The beautiful restored 17th century Venetian mansion, which houses the museum, is included in the list of architectural historical monuments by the Ministry of Culture. The building was officially donated to the state by the president and co-founder of the museum, Mrs. Voyatzakis, and is a typical home of the Venetian aristocracy. The official opening of the Museum of History and Folk Art took place in 1998.

The exposition of the museum gives an extensive idea of the lifestyle and traditions of the inhabitants of the island. The collection of the museum contains more than 5,000 exhibits, including fine handmade textiles, weaving equipment, embroidery, lace, a chic collection of folk costumes and jewelry, fine examples of ceramic products, as well as products made of stone, wood and metal. The museum displays documents, photographs, maps, weapons, flags, coins and more. There is also an exposition dedicated to the agricultural traditions of the island. In a separate room, exhibits characterizing traditional Cretan professions are presented: farmer, saddler, cutter, etc.

The main objectives of the museum are to collect and research historical and ethnographic material from all over Crete and especially the prefecture of Rethymno, as well as stimulating interest among the population in the study of Cretan traditions. The museum has a multifunctional hall,
