Heraklion was built by the Arabs in the 9th century. Then it was called Handakas. In the Middle Ages, the Venetians surrounded the city with a wall 5 km long. In a small square in the center of the city, there is a beautiful marble fountain named after the Venetian commander Morosini. Several Venetian houses have also survived.

The pride of the city is the richest Archaeological Museum. All the most significant exhibits of the Minoan culture are collected here: ceramics, stone carvings, carvings, sculptures, gold jewelry, metal products, beautiful frescoes from palaces and rich mansions, as well as a unique stone sarcophagus from Agia Triada.
