Photo and description

The old churches, partially preserved in the Old Bar, continue to attract tourists to the walls of the ancient citadel. Archaeological finds indicate that these areas were inhabited during the Chalcolithic era. In the 9th century, the city of Bar belonged to the great Slavic Zet principality.

In general, about 240 structures were erected in the city, but a small part has survived to this day. The once majestic ancient temples today show tourists only the remains of the foundations, such as the Church of St. George, which was once a cathedral.

To the east of the Citadel is the Church of St. Veneranda, built in the 15th century. The name Veneranda is the Latin version of the famous Greek name Paraskeva. The latter was a holy Christian great martyr, she did not want to renounce Christ and sacrificed her life in the name of her faith.

Saint Veneranda was popular in Albania, and the cult of the holy great martyr can still be traced in Greece and the Balkans. Scientists also associate it with the cult of Venus. The popularity of Paraskeva can be explained by the fact that her name, birth, baptism are related to Friday, on the same day she was prayed for - in fact, this is a contrast to the Friday of Muslims, who for a long time planted their culture in the Balkans.

Currently the church of Saint Veneranda in the Old Bar has been completely renovated, and chamber concerts are held here.
