Photo and description

The Old Bar, where about 240 buildings were built at one time, is famous for numerous ancient temples, most of which, unfortunately, have not survived to this day. But some specimens that survived not only the Turkish-Montenegrin wars, but also devastating earthquakes, continue to be part of the conditional exposition of the open-air museum, which can be called the "Great Old Bar".

In the old part of the city you can see the temple Saint Catherine's, built in the 15th century, now abandoned. By the way, Saint Catherine is the Christian Great Martyr Catherine of Alexandria. Churches in her honor have been erected in many cities of Europe and Russia.

The church is located near the Illyrian mound. Originally, the Church of St. Catharine had a rectangular shape, and the building itself was made of large polished stone. Until today, almost nothing has remained of the church: the temple has not been reconstructed for a long time. As a result, its roof gradually collapses, and the two-meter walls are overgrown with dense and dense cover of greenery and weeds.

Before the church inside was richly decorated with paintings, the western facade was decorated with frescoes on religious subjects. Nevertheless, the remnants of past frescoes and traces of inscriptions can be seen today. In 1980, the Church of St. Catharine was put in order: not only the outer walls were reconstructed, but also the interior decoration. It is thanks to these restoration works that the shrine has survived to this day.
