The Islamic Center (full name - Masjid Al-Sultan Muhammad Al Thakurufaanu Auzam) is located in Male, the capital of the Republic of Maldives. The golden dome of this magnificent modern building dominates the architecture of Male and has become a symbol of the city. The complex, which rises next to the main square, opposite the National Security Headquarters, was built with donations from the Gulf States, Pakistan, Brunei and Malaysia and opened in 1984.

The pride of the whole structure, the Big Friday Mosque, the largest in the country, surprises with its simplicity: it is made of white marble and is practically devoid of decorations. Domes with metal tops sparkling in the sun are visible to ships entering Male 'harbor; The minaret, with its traditional curved geometric decor, has long been the tallest structure in Male.

The main prayer hall of the mosque is decorated with carved panels made of precious wood panels and doors, specially woven carpets with patterns pointing towards Mecca. During prayer, up to 5,000 believers can freely sit inside. The Islamic Center complex includes, in addition to the mosque, a conference room, a library and classrooms.

Non-Muslim tourists wishing to visit the mosque are allowed to enter from 9 am to 5 pm, with the exception of prayer times. Men must wear trousers, women must wear a long skirt or dress, shoulders and arms covered.
