Photo and descriptionIn one of the oldest buildings in the city of Penza, there is a museum of folk art, founded in 1975. Before the revolution, the building of the museum with a three-window attic belonged to the Penza timber merchant, the patron saint of artisans of the region - S.L. Tyurin. The entire building, from the veranda to the mezzanine on columns, is decorated with wood carvings in the form of lace. Today the estate is considered a monument of Russian wooden architecture of the first half of the nineteenth century. The Museum of Folk Art was formed with the help of public organizations on the basis of exhibitions of masters of decorative and applied arts and crafts of the Penza region. The mission of the museum at all times has been to preserve the original culture of the region and to study traditional art crafts. The exposition of the museum includes a number of folk crafts of the Penza region: basket weaving, wood carving, glass and ceramics, carpet weaving and the famous weaving of a scarf from goat down with special lace. The special pride of the museum is the Abashevskaya whistle, a world-famous clay toy that has survived to our time in its original form. The total number of exhibits of local crafts in the museum is more than four and a half thousand units of the main fund. The unique atmosphere of the museum with wooden models in bottles, with straw dolls and bast shoes, cast miniatures and wrought-iron candlesticks of that time will not leave indifferent any visitor.
