Photo and descriptionNorth Cape is the northernmost point in Europe, 307m high, located on the island of Magero, not far from the small Norwegian port town of Hammerfest. The North Cape is the largest of three granite rock ledges, with small lakes on its flat top in the rocky tundra. The cape serves as the most important coastal landmark for ships. From here, from the observation deck, a magnificent view of the boundless Arctic Ocean opens up against the background of the heavenly flares of the Northern Lights. The cape got its name in 1533 thanks to the English explorer Richard Chancellor, who was trying to find the northeastern sea route to China.
