Cagayanchillo is a small town located in the east of Palawan island on the island of the same name - Cagayanchillo. The provincial capital of Puerto Princesa is 330 km away. The island city is located almost in the middle of the Sulu Sea. According to the 2007 census, about 6.5 thousand people lived there.

There are no mountain ranges or vast forests on the island. Low hills occupy a very small part of Cagayanchillo in the northeast, the rest of the island is represented by plains.

Cagayanchillo is known primarily for being the closest settlement to the Tubbataha Marine National Park, on the territory of which the coral reef of the same name is located, attracting thousands of tourist divers.

Another attraction of Cagayanchillo is the eponymous fort - one of the few military fortifications built during the Spanish colonization and preserved to this day. The construction of the fort began at the end of the 16th century by father Nicholas Melo and father Alonso Coloza and lasted over a hundred years. Only at the beginning of the 18th century, the fort was completed under the direction of Father Ipolito Casiano. The fortress was made in the shape of a diamond and covered an area of 162 sq. M. It was built on the coast on a high promontory, and its walls are lined with a mixture of sea stones and limestone. Similar to some other Spanish forts, inside the Cagayanchillo fort is a church surrounded by massive walls 12 meters high and 3 meters thick. These walls protected the inhabitants of the fort from pirate raids.

On the island of Palawan, only three such fortified structures have survived - apart from Cagayanchillo, these are Fort Isabel in the town of Taitai and Fort Cuyo in the city of the same name.
