During archaeological excavations carried out in 1984 on the site of the lower castle of Vitebsk of the XIV century, the remains of the foundation of a watchtower that once existed here, erected in 1330-51, were discovered. The tower had an octagonal base, from a distance it seemed round, therefore it received the nickname "round".
