Photo and description

The Mario Rimoldi Museum of Contemporary Art in Cortina d'Ampezzo houses one of the largest private collections of 20th century Italian art. More than 300 works of such great Italian painters of the beginning of the last century as De Chirico, Campigli, Sironi, Guttuso, De Pisis, Music, Savinio, Tomea, Morandi and others are exhibited here.

The museum was officially opened in 1974 thanks to the generous donation of Mrs. Rose Brown, widow of the famous collector Mario Rimoldi, who donated a collection of works of art to the city. Rimoldi himself was friends with some of the artists whose paintings are presented in the museum today - with De Chirico, Sironi, Campigli. In 1941, when the first international art exhibition opened in Cortina, Rimoldi's collection was already very significant - it already contained paintings by Morandi, Semegini, Rosai, Garbari, Severini, Tosi and Guidi. After the Second World War, the collection was replenished with experimental works of masters: Rimoldi was especially interested in the visual arts of the Venetian school, whose representatives were Cadorin, Cesetti, Saetti, Tomea and Depero. He also paid attention to the new artistic trends that were forming at that time - this is how works by Guttuso, Corporra, Cripp, Dova, etc. appeared in the collection. Rimoldi's merits also include the "discovery" of foreign artists - Leger, Villon, Zadkin, Kokoschka.

Today, the collection of Mario Rimoldi is considered one of the most significant collections of Italian art of the 20th century. Here you can not only enjoy the works of great artists, but also to learn about the life of the collector himself and about the art of the 20th century in general.
