Castle Hill description and photos - Norway: Tonsberg. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The title in English is Castle Hill. Photo and descriptionCastle Hill, located in the heart of the Norwegian city of Tonsberg, is a large hill on which King Haakon Haakonson built a fortress with a royal castle, a monastery and a hospital. Fortress walls made of stone after many centuries look like growing out of the rock. In 1503, despite its inaccessibility, the bastion was attacked by the Swedes and was destroyed. Now only ruins remain of it. The only reminder of its former grandeur is the seventeen-meter tower, restored in 1888, rising on a cliff, from where a magnificent view of the city's surroundings opens. The initials of the three Norse kings are engraved on the wall at the entrance to the tower.
