Savonlinna began with a trading settlement that arose near the fortress. It received the rights of a city in 1639. As a border region between East and West, this area has experienced many wars. The Olavinlinna fortress, founded in 1475 to protect the eastern border of Sweden, has passed from the Swedes and Finns to the Russians and vice versa throughout its history. And they built it one by one, then others. In the XVIII century. the work was led by the commander A. V. Suvorov. The fortress and its two museums (the Fortress History Museum and the Orthodox Museum) are open all year round. Olavinlinna is the best-preserved military fortification in northern Europe.
