Photo and description

In 1803-1805. an anatomicalum was built on the Toomemagi hill according to the project of the architect I.V.Krause. Since another building was later built, the earlier one began to be called the old anatomical chamber, and the one built later - the new one.

The old anatomical chamber, made in a simple classical style, was built on the bastion of the Dome Val. First, the central round part of the building was built - the rotunda, which stood on a square base. The building was enlivened by 8 windows, a balcony with wrought iron railings, decorated with garlands, as well as urns, which were very common in the period of classicism.

Almost the entire interior is occupied by a single room, two and a half floors high. The ceiling of the hall is supported by 8 columns decorated with wreaths. Earlier, the walls of the hall were decorated with emblems made with grisaille. However, today they cannot be seen, as they were later covered with plaster.

Soon there was a need to expand the anatomy. According to the plan of the same architect I.V. Krause in 1825-1827. 2 lateral two-storey wings were built, which were connected to the rotunda by half arches, thus forming a complex of buildings in the form of a semicircle. In the years 1856-1860. the building was again decided to expand. This time the architect of the project was K. Rathaus. However, this time the completion was not very successful. The dimensions of the extension did not correspond to the proportions of the anatomical and spoiled the general view as a whole.

In addition to the large hall, the rotunda contained a kitchen, dissecting rooms, a corpse, in which there was a special machine for lifting and delivering corpses to the round hall. Also, anatomical and pathological specimens were kept here.

During its history, many scientists-doctors worked in the premises of the anatomicalum, the memory of two of them is immortalized by memorial plaques on the wall of the building. One of the tablets is dedicated to the famous physician Professor Rudolf Buchheim. In the upper part there is a bas-relief of a scientist, and under it there is an inscription dedicated to the professor. The scientist worked at the university for 20 years. He is rightfully considered the founder of modern pharmacology. In 1847, he was the first in the world to establish a pharmacological laboratory and equip it accordingly. The laboratory he created became a model and example for other institutions.

The second memorial plaque is dedicated to Nikolai Nilovich Burdenko, who worked here from 1901 to 1918.
