Located in northern Finland, Lapland, and covering an area of 2,550 km2, the size of Luxembourg, the park was created in 1983, named after the former President and Prime Minister of Finland, Urho Kekkonen. The local population is traditionally engaged in reindeer husbandry, hunting and fishing. Tourism has recently played an important role in the region. The main tourist center is located in the village of Saariselka, which is located in a mountainous area. Most hiking trails start here.
