Photo and description

The Basilica of the Holy Virgin, protector of the disadvantaged, is one of the buildings in Piazza Santa Maria, which is the heart of Valencia and attracts a huge number of people every day. The Basilica of the Holy Virgin, protector of the disadvantaged, was built between 1652 and 1667. This oval-shaped church is one of the most important Catholic churches in Valencia. The basilica got its name in honor of the Holy Virgin Mary, who is considered the patroness of the city and is revered by every inhabitant of Valencia.

In the main hall of the church, which has a round shape, right behind the altar, the main relic of the basilica is kept - a sculptural image of the Virgin Mary, well preserved from ancient times. A beautiful statue, made in the Gothic style, with a delicate, a face framed by long hair, adorned with beautiful jewelry. There is evidence that such a tradition previously existed - if a beggar was buried who did not have relatives and friends, then this statue was taken out of the church behind his coffin, thus the Holy Virgin accompanied the dispossessed on his last journey.

At the beginning of the 20th century, it was decided to reconstruct and expand the building of the basilica. A design competition was held, which was won by the architect Vicente Traver, according to which the church building was supposed to have the highest dome of all city buildings. But the Spanish Civil War prevented the project from being implemented. Recently, questions about the expansion of the building again began to be raised by the authorities and representatives of the church.
