Photo and description

In Seville, in the La Macarena area, there is an interesting church - the Basilica of Santa Maria de la Esperanza Macarena, or Basilica de la Macarena. This is a fairly young, modern church, built between 1941 and 1949 by the architect Aurelio Gomez Millian.

The church is popular because it contains the image of one of the most revered saints in Seville - the Sorrowful Virgin of Macarene. The image of the Blessed Virgin of Makarenska annually participates in the Procession of the Cross on the night of Good Friday: accompanied by members of the brotherhood, the Virgin of Makarenska walks through the streets of the city. Thanks to this tradition, the Virgin of Macarena became popular not only in Seville, but throughout Spain and even beyond.

The image of the Virgin was created in the 17th century, unfortunately, there is no exact information about who was its author. The Virgin is seated in an altar that is slightly dimly lit. Transparent tears made of crystal froze on the bright face of the Virgin, but at the same time the corners of her lips are slightly raised, which is a symbol of the hope that the Virgin gives to all the sick, whose patroness she is considered. Seville bullfighters also revere the Virgin of Macarene as their patroness.

The building of the basilica itself also deserves attention. Made in the Baroque style, in white-ocher colors, the building looks majestic and seems to be filled with light. The main entrance is designed as a triumphal arch. Inside the temple there is a museum, which displays objects and artifacts related to religion, church rites and traditions, and sacred art.
