Photo and description

The Bryggen quarter has been included by UNESCO in the List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Here, on the coast of the bay, fish traders and artisans have settled since the 12th century. After a fire in 1702, many of the houses were completely restored. Here you can see plank pavements, wooden warehouse houses, wooden statues on the facades of houses. In addition, there are many souvenir shops, art galleries and small restaurants.

The Bruggen Museum is housed in a modern building built on the site of an old monastery destroyed during the Reformation. Here you can see a collection of archaeological finds and a model of old Bryggen. Nearby there is the Hanseatic Museum, where authentic items of merchant life of that era are exhibited.

There is a church of the Virgin Mary in the quarter, founded in the XII century. This is the oldest building in Bergen. Hanseatic merchants prayed here, mostly Germans. In the church you can admire the magnificent 15th century Baroque altar, created by German craftsmen.
