Photo and description

The Bulgarian town of Ruse, located on the Danube bank, bears the name "Little Vienna" not by chance. The buildings of the late 19th century, distinguished by their skillful interior and exterior decoration, were erected by the best European architects - German, Italian and Bulgarian. And today Ruse is an important economic and industrial center, living an active cultural life, of which the city art gallery is also a part.

The gallery celebrated its 80th anniversary. It was created by order of the mayor of the city of Ruse, Yurdan Pavlov, in 1933 after Russian artists approached him with a request. Their first joint exhibition, which was organized a little earlier in the same year, was a great success, and the painters decided that Rousse is in dire need of a permanent gallery or art museum.

At first, the gallery was housed in the House of Press and Art, and three years after its creation, it was moved to the library at the Ruse Town Hall, located in the Dinol House, a beautiful building in the city center. The fund of the gallery gradually expanded year after year, and in 1979 a separate building was built, where the gallery was located on an area of about 2800 square meters. There is a Ruse art gallery there to this day.

The gallery contains canvases by artists from Ruse and the region, as well as works by outstanding Bulgarian painters - Ivan Mrkvichka, Ivan Nenov, Vladimir Dimitrov-Master, Nikola Tanev, Vasil Stoilov, Bencho Obreshkov, Dimitar Kazakov and others. It also houses works by foreign artists, for example, Camilo Otero, Corneliu Baba, Victor Vasarelli and others. In addition, the Ruse Art Gallery has a rich collection of graphic artists from Cuban, Romanian, Czech, Chinese and Bulgarian masters.
