Photo and description

Velika Mlaka (translated from Croatian - "big heart") is a small village located five kilometers south of the border with New Zagreb and not far from Velika Gorica. According to the 2001 census, the village had 3306 inhabitants, making it the most densely populated area after Velika Gorica.
Today, many consider the village to be a residential area of Zagreb, but as an independent territorial unit it has existed for almost 700 years.

Among the sights it is worth noting the wooden chapel of St. Barbara, which is located in the center of the town, literally 10 walking distance north of the highway. The church is one of the most prominent traditional architectural monuments in the region. It was built in 1642 and reconstructed in 1912.

After the reconstruction, the church got a porch, decorated with symbols of the sun and various intricate ornaments. The ceiling and the main altar, which are covered with paintings, are also interesting. They belong to the XVII-XVIII centuries and they tell about the life of St. Barbara.

You can get to Velika Mlaki by bus from Velika Gorica.
