Photo and description

The Church of Elijah the Prophet, located on the embankment of the city at 1, Buslaev Brothers Street, is a functioning temple and an architectural monument. The church is under state protection and is included in the “Little Jerusalem” excursion route, widely known in Yevpatoria.

The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah, along with the Juma-Jami Mosque and St. Nicholas Cathedral, are clearly visible from the Black Sea. It was from here, in pre-revolutionary times, towards the west that the new part of the city began to grow. The Church of Elijah the Prophet in the Greco-Byzantine style was built in 1911-18. Greek urban community. The project was carried out by the Evpatoria architect A. Henrikh. Before the revolution, the famous scientist and new martyr Elizabeth served in this church. Since the parishioners of the Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah were citizens of Greece, therefore, the church itself remained operational after the revolution - until 1936. In the late 1950s, the church was converted into a gymnasium.

In 2003, for the anniversary of the city, a bell 89 cm high and 84 cm in diameter was raised on the belfry of the temple of Elijah the Prophet. There is an inscription on the bell that reads: “This bell was cast in honor of the 2500th anniversary of the God-saved city Evpatoria in the summer of 2003 from the Nativity of Christ for the temple of the prophet Elijah. ”

The church building is relatively small, but it looks solemn and imposing: the traditional cruciform plan of the temple, laconic details of the facade design, dark smooth walls made of sawn stone and belfry above the entrance. The dome of the temple was installed on an octagonal drum. The church has triple windows with stained-glass windows. Its main decorations are thin pilasters, semicircular arches and a three-tiered bell tower. The main entrance to the temple is designed in the form of an arch, which rests on two semi-columns. The interior of the church is decorated with amazing frescoes, made in the modern Greek style.

Today, the temple of Elijah the Prophet houses a lamp with a living fire, which was specially delivered from a temple located in the Greek city of Zakynthos.
