Photo and description

The Church of Elijah the Prophet was built in 1592 and as if in one day. Therefore, the temple began to be called "ordinary", and three Ilyinsky lanes next to the temple were renamed into the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Obydensky.

Such a high speed of construction could be due to the fact that the temple it was decided to erect in the place where a lot of wooden building materials that came to Moscow by the river were accumulated. The area was called Skorodom, and its inhabitants earned their living by collecting structures from the forest, which were then transported to other parts of Moscow.

The Obydensky temple of Elijah the Prophet was one of the most revered in Moscow. The tsar himself took part in the processions of the cross (during the temple feast or prayers to end the drought), which advanced from the temple to the Kremlin.

At the very beginning of the 18th century, instead of a wooden church, a stone church was built, which has stood on Ostozhie to this day. Funds for its construction were donated by the village brothers Gabriel and Vasily. The project was developed by the architect Ivan Zarudny. The renovation of the temple and the construction of the bell tower took place in the second half of the 19th century with the participation of the architect Alexander Kaminsky.

In Soviet times, the temple was not closed, although such attempts were made. Therefore, the parish of the church in Obydensky lane received parishioners of other, closed churches.

The Kazan icon of the Mother of God, written in the middle of the 17th century by Simon Ushakov, is kept in the church. Among the shrines of this temple are the icons of the Mother of God "Unexpected Joy", recognized as miraculous, Theodorovskaya and Vladimirskaya, as well as icons with the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh and Seraphim of Sarov. In the name of Seraphim of Sarov, a new chapel of the church was consecrated, built several years ago.
