Photo and description

Kazanlak is a Bulgarian town with an ancient history, located in the Rose Valley. In addition, in ancient times, the capital of the Thracian state was located in its place. Today this city is a popular tourist center in northern Bulgaria. The city is notable for interesting architecture; one of the most remarkable buildings in Kazanlak is the church of St. the prophet Elijah.

In 1812, the old building of the Church of the Prophet Elijah was built, it was quite small and ascetic. Due to the fact that the church of the prophet Elijah was erected during the time of the Ottoman invaders, the floor of the building is located much below the level of the earth's surface, in order to get to the church, you need to climb a ladder down from a dozen steps. In 1865-1866, the church was rebuilt with money, collected with the active participation of the Bozveli brothers by residents of the city. The icons for the church were painted by the master George from Chirpan. The new church was consecrated in 1872.

With the church of St. The prophet Elijah is associated with a sad historical fact. In 1877, during the war of liberation, the Turks brutally slaughtered about two hundred residents of Kazanlak here, who were looking for salvation from the soldiers of the army of Suleiman Pasha in the building of the temple.

The church was badly damaged by a major fire in 1936. To date, the building has been completely restored. This church is one of the most visited in Kazanlak. The building, rather modest in appearance, is surrounded by a courtyard with carefully trimmed bushes and trees, and equipped with flower beds. There is a fountain in the courtyard near the bell tower, and there are also several skillfully made tombstones. The front wooden door of the church is decorated with magnificent carvings. In addition, there is a small memorial dedicated to the victims of the tragic events of 1877.
