Assumption Cathedral on Gorodok description and photos - Russia - Moscow region: Zvenigorod. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionIn the 12th century, the Kremlin was founded on a high hill on the left bank of the Moscow River. Now this territory is called Gorodok. Here is the Assumption Cathedral - the only building of the Zvenigorod Kremlin that has survived to this day. The white-stone one-domed temple is crowned with a helmet-shaped head and decorated with a triple belt of carved ornament. With the single-domed cathedrals erected in Russia in the XII century, it is related to the laying of a white-stone wall, when all flaws and gaps were completely filled with lime mortar. Interior murals by Andrei Rublev and his students are preserved on the eastern pillars and in the drum. A two-tiered bell tower with a domed roof was built next to the model of the Old Russian belfries in the 19th century.
