Nikolsky Cathedral description and photos - Russia - Moscow region: Mozhaisk. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionOnly high earthen ramparts have survived from the ancient Mozhaisk Kremlin. And on the hill rises the St. Nicholas Cathedral, built in the middle of the 19th century to replace the collapsed temple of the same name of the 14th century. The church was built in the pseudo-Gothic style by the masters of the school of M.F. Kazakov. The brick building with rich white-stone decor includes fragments of more ancient structures: on the southern wall you can see the remains of the Nikolsky Gate, completed by a gate church of the 17th century, where the image of Nikola Mozhaisky is located. The remains of the 16th century Kremlin wall have been preserved in the basement of the church. Next to the cathedral there is a four-tiered bell tower, built at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as a small one-domed Peter and Paul Church, built in 1852 on the site of the collapsed Ilyinsky Cathedral.
