Photo and description

The construction of the Assumption Cathedral began in the 20s of the XIX century. The temple was built on the site of a dilapidated stone church. It is known that previously there was a fortress on this territory.

The construction of the cathedral took place in several stages. Originally, a refectory with two aisles was added to the old church. The first of them, Pokrovsky, was consecrated in the late 20s of the 19th century, and the second, Mikhailovsky, was consecrated in the early 30s. Then the dilapidated building was dismantled and a new temple was built in its place.

The architectural style of the building is Empire. The cathedral is decorated with side porticos built of white stone. The building is crowned with a massive light drum. The bell tower adjoining the temple consists of three tiers.

Funds for the construction work were donated by the provincial secretary Ivan Mitrofanov, councilor Semyon Lepeshkin, as well as some other benefactors. Later the building was slightly rebuilt at the expense of S. Lepeshkin. In the 60s of the XIX century, the cathedral was surrounded by a stone fence.

During the Soviet period, the temple was destroyed, the services in it ceased. The building was used as a warehouse, and there was also an auto repair shop; In the late 80s of the XX century, the building was placed at the disposal of the community of believers, and soon after that, repair and restoration work began in the temple. Vitaliy Kotsenko is currently the rector of the church. The chapel of St. Sergius of Radonezh is attached to the temple.
